TMT (Thermally Modified Timber)

Home TMT (Thermally Modified Timber)
Thermally modified wood has been used in Europe for decades. In New Zealand, it’s a relatively new phenomenon. LUNAWOOD is imported to New Zealand and profiled locally by JSC Timber. It originates in the forests of Finland, offering both distinctive aesthetic and performance characteristics unlike any other timber cladding.

Thermal modification is not a new process. In fact, the concept dates back to the Vikings who knew that, when building defensive fencing for fortifications, poles made from wood with a burnt surface were more durable than those which had not been treated in any way.

The patented production process is based on the gradual thermal modification of the wood, wherein the chemical and physical properties undergo a permanent change. Thermal treatment means that the process itself uses only water vapour and heat; no chemicals are being used. Heat inside the thermal modification chamber is slowly raised up to 212°C and the whole process can last up to 110 hours. When the process is complete, the moisture percentage of the raw material is around 4 – 7 %.

JSC is a proud exclusive Partner of LUNAWOOD in New Zealand.
