LUNAWOOD THERMOWOOD is a beautiful, sustainable wood material produced by using natural methods, heat and steam. Thermal modification improves the wood’s properties, thereby expanding the range of applications in which the wood can be used. Thermowood is dimensionally stable, resistant to decay and resin-free. It can be used inside or outdoors, in any climate. Lunawood is a non-toxic natural product which is easy to machine and install.
Thermally modified wood has been used in Europe for decades. In New Zealand, it’s a relatively new phenomenon. LUNAWOOD is imported to New Zealand and profiled locally by JSC Timber. It originates in the forests of Finland, offering both distinctive aesthetic and performance characteristics unlike any other timber cladding.
Thermal modification is not a new process. In fact, the concept dates back to the Vikings who knew that, when building defensive fencing for fortifications, poles made from wood with a burnt surface were more durable than those which had not been treated in any way.
The patented production process is based on the gradual thermal modification of the wood, wherein the chemical and physical properties undergo a permanent change. Thermal treatment means that the process itself uses only water vapour and heat; no chemicals are being used. The heat inside the thermal modification chamber is slowly raised to 212°C and the whole process can last up to 110 hours. When the process is complete, the moisture percentage of the raw material is around 4 – 7 %.
