Blackbutt is a very dense hardwood. Because of its durable and strong nature, this hardwood is commonly used for flooring, cladding, poles and more. 

Blackbutt heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, sometimes with a slight pink tinge. The sapwood in much paler in colour, and can sometimes have small gum veins visible. 

Blackbutt timber is predominantly grown on the north coast of New South Wales and the southern coast of Queensland.

  • DISTRIBUTION: Good availability throughout Australian East Coastal Regions
  • COLOUR: Attractive colouring from cream to pale brown, sometimes with a slight tinge of pink.
  • GRAIN: Blackbutt is a commonly grown hardwood. Its grain is usually straight and texture is medium and even.
  • DENSITY/STRENGTH *900kgs/m3 **Janka Dry Hardness: 9.1 kN Medium shrinkage rates apply
  • DURABILITY: Class 1 for above ground use Class 2 for in ground use
  • SEASONING: Relatively easy to dry but can be prone to surface and end check if the process is hurried
  • WORKING QUALITIES: Blackbutt is relatively easy to work, cuts easily and is also a good to fair bending timber.
  • USES: Applied and structural Flooring, Decking, Paneling, Poles Sleepers, Pergolas, stairs and framework.
